Munnar is the principal tea growing region in the south. These ladies walk barefoot up the steep hills and pick 16kg of tea and earn 90 Rupees (or $ 2.15) per day. Check out the video at the end of this blog! We tasted several Indian teas- chai, mint, chocolate, ginger, cardamon, lemon, vanilla, etc. and bought aromatic oils like lavender, rose, and tea tree.
There were beautiful purple jakaranda trees in bloom and wildlife too along the misty winding mountain roads! During the tea tour we passed an Indian catholic elementary school where the children were waving to us and of course, I went over to say hello!
After exploring, we settled in at the High Range Club where Paul played golf and we drank tea like civilized British club members. We enjoyed 4-course meals for $4.50 per person with 5-star service! The club feels like we took a step back in time of the Raj. There was a tiger hunting "trophy" (rotting head of an endangered or extinct dead animal) in the men's only bar and photos of when the British first arrived in India and called tigers "man-eaters" so they could shoot them with a clear conscience.
Please check out the video below of the women picking tea leaves!
