Yoga and Ayurvedic massages in Varkala, Kerala

Varkala is a beach destination with a clifftop row of guesthouses and cafes. The town is known for it's healing Ayurvedic treatments (Ayur means life and Veda means science of knowledge). We got invigorating oil massages to improve muscle tone and blood circulation (see greased-up Paul above) that ended with them washing you. It was an interesting experience and not relaxing. Also, we have been doing yoga everyday here and Paul got a private lesson to teach him how to get in the Lotus position. Doing hatha yoga really puts your mind in a state of peacefullness. "Mastery of the body and breath are an undoubted aid to those concerned with their spiritual evolution. For by having full control over the physical condition, the body becomes calm, allowing the mind to be directed more easily in perfect tranquility, to achieve a higher spiritual level," Hata Yoga Pradipika.
On our morning run we saw the fishermen rowing their boats ashore and pulling in the fishing nets. "Heave-ho!" Notice the white guy in the crowd? Next on our run we went by a 2,000 year-old temple and saw devotee medicine men give blessings to people on Sat. morning.
