Ephesus, Turkey

Founded in 600 BC, Ephesus (Efes, like the Turkish beer) is the best preserved ancient city in Turkey. This theater (AD 41) was built so the acoustics improved by having the seats gets steeper and building a wall on the front side and much more! Gladiators once faught here as well. Below, the library (bottom left) held 12,000 scrolls and books were hidden between the 1 meter walls for protection. Walking on the Sacred Way (bottom right) you could see the chariot ruts in the marble paving stones. I learned that they always had the bath houses at the entrance to the city because they wouldnt let travellers in until they were clean. Next was the bank (ATM) and the market (to buy food or trade for slaves) . Salt was the most valuable item. After they were permitted to walk along the marble pathways to the boutiques, churches, and private houses. So civilized!
