The British introduced tea to this high society hill station in the late 1800's. It became the most glamorous outpost of the Brisitsh Empire at that time and popular for trekking. We visited the exclusive clubs, shopped in the Victorian-style stores, ate yummy European pasteries, and drank the famous Darjeeling tea with milk & sugar.
We bought 2 carpets to benefit children in Darjeeling. Also, we visited the Tibetan Refugee Center, where you see the the children playing marbles below. With the upcoming Olympics in Beijing, it's a good time to reflect on China's horrific record of human rights abuses in Tibet. Read the Dali Lama's autobiography, Freedom In Excile, like we did, for more understanding of the issues.Monday, April 28, 2008
