We went to 3 countries in 24 hours in the Golden Triangle (Thailand, Burma, and Laos)! It was a quick trip to Burma, where they only give you a day permit to go shopping, do a little sight seeing, and get a stamp on your passport. The border authorities are very strict right now because of the cyclone disaster last week estimating 100,000 dead. The newspapers here estimate there are over 1 million starving because the government wont allow aid into the country. So sad.
The drive to Chiang Khong was beautiful passing small villages and in the 1600's, opium was on this trade route in Thailand. The farms don't have poppies now, but in Laos and Burma they do. There was a giant gold Buddah along our drive with his head in the clouds (pictured above). We stayed the night in a bamboo tree house (pictured below) eating Mexican food and had a fabulous massage too. It was funny to overhear an Australian describing Mexican food to a British girl, for instance she said, "a quesadilla is like a sandwich with cheese." Neither had a clue of what the difference was between an enchilada, burrito, or taco.
