Tubing in Vang Vieng, Laos

Vang Vieng is known for its outdoor recreational activities like rock climbing, kayaking, caving, and the most fun we had was leisurely floating down the river for 2 hours in innertubes. The limestone cliffs and warm emerald green water were just stunning! This city is a "Global River Nation," which means it's a city only foreign tourists go to (99% of the Laos people living there are in the tourist business), that has yummy western food (i.e. cheap baguette sandwiches, juice shakes, hamburgers, indian food); and with lots of places to party. Vang Vieng reminded me of Spring Break in Mexico where young people go to drink whiskey buckets, jump off tall rickety unsafe platforms into the river, drink magic shakes, and dance all night. We were kept awake all night by the nightclub playing loud music on the river. It was funny that every restaurant in town played the "Friends" tv show re-runs all day and all night. I guess it's part of our culture and makes people who have been travelling a while feel like home? Instead of doing that, Paul and I ate mulberry pancakes and a mulberry shake at the Organic Farm Cafe, which is an organization that raises money for children in Laos to go to school and teaches their parents skills on how to cultivate the land without hurting the environment. It costs $50 US to send a child to public school for 1 year in Laos. Check out those kids below riding their bikes to school! Below is a picture of our bunglaow, Sunset Home Guesthouse, with a river view and the owners gave us fresh green tea.
